There are lots of things going on, so apologies in advance for the long email.

Transportation. If you are having issues with EAP or AAP busses, please be patient as the schedule shakes out. If things continue to be problematic, email You can fill out a bus stop request form to request a different stop. You can also fill out a sibling waiver form to ask if a sibling can ride the EAP bus. You can also ask for a stop closer to you so that your child can ride the junior high bus to attend elementary music at your EAP child’s assigned school, even if you are outside that junior high area. Also note that Leota & Northshore JH afterschool activity busses will be including AAP hub stops in their routes this year.

Survey. Remember the survey we did at the beginning of the summer?  Here are the results. The topline is that families in EAP and AAP are generally very happy – but that families seeking in-school HiCap services via clustering & differentiation have been more frustrated, both for elementary and junior high. The detailed results including all verbatim comments (and there were lots!) were shared with the HiCap administrators this summer.

Challenge Petition. It is looking increasingly that the Junior High Challenge program is in jeopardy, in favor of having mixed ability classrooms in the new middle schools in 2017-18. Whether you have a student who went through Challenge, or have an elementary student looking forward to Challenge in the future, if dedicated Challenge classes with like-minded peers is important to you, please sign the petition and help spread the word.

Info Night  K-8 Highly Capable Parent Information Night is Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 7-8 p.m., at the Northshore Performing Arts Center. Come learn about the K-8 Highly Capable Programs and identification process for students interested in consideration for highly capable services in the 2016-17 school year. Applications/nominations for students in current grades K-11 will be accepted Oct. 1 – Nov. 3, at 4 p.m.
While this is an official district event, HiCap Parent Advisory Board reps will be there to answer questions before and after the presentation. If you are hoping to test your kids for HiCap this year (for services next year), we strongly encourage you to attend, regardless of grade level. We have heard there may be some changes this year.

Save the Date! This year’s What Parents Need to Know about Smart Kids will be on October 21 at 7-9pm in the Board Room of the Northshore Admin Building, 3330 Monte Villa Pkwy, Bothell. If you have a hicap kid, you need to hear this information. More information when the date gets closer.

Big Name Speaker! Dr. James T. Webb is coming to Tacoma on October 13! Dr. Webb’s bio is long and amazing, he literally wrote THE book on parenting hicap kids, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to hear him speak in person. This FREE event is open to the public, sponsored by Seabury School. More information

Conferences. October is conference season. The annual WA state HiCap teacher’s conference is WAETAG, and will be happening on October 16-17 in Tacoma. Also the Oregon OATAG conference will be October 10 in Portland, OR. If your child’s teacher is looking for more support, either would be a great resource to suggest. FYI, the district did make professional development available to teachers over the summer who would have HiCap students in their classroom.

SENG groups. There are two SENG discussion groups starting up this month – Seattle/Wallingford on Monday mornings, Bellevue on Monday evenings. These discussion groups are a great way to both learn and get support from other parents about parenting complex, sensitive, intense hicap children. More information

If you are interested in joining a SENG discussion group in Woodinville, please reply to this email with your preference for mornings or evenings. If we can get a critical mass of people interested, Austina may be able to host another group. Last year’s group found the experience very rewarding, and continues to meet monthly.

Phew, that’s all for now. More later.

Hope you are having a great back to school!
The HiCap Board
